Why are hewing axes....Curved?

I hope this video will give people a better idea on how to use hewings axes by helping people to understand why they are the shape they are. Why they are curved when they are used to flatten logs and cants.

I produce videos on a bunch of topics from bees to prospecting and a stack of stuff in between but many of them show off the use of traditional vintage tools. If you see a tool that you would like for your own I probably won't sell you mine but I may have another in stock or I can get one from France, Germany, Japan or wherever. I make little bit of money from selling tools but mostly I just like to share them and share how to use them.

If you like what we do maybe you could show your appreciation.

Social media stuff.

Thanks to Jayendra Birchall for the intro music.

Really useful information, especially when looking at buying old axes. You’d easily think that you’re looking at a damaged axe if you don’t know this. The comparison to plane irons makes it obvious. Thanks a lot.

Great subject and, Right on as far as the curves! - I know I disagree with accepted norms as to what was and is left and right-handed in hewing axes, but I'm hopelessly left-handed and I hew to my left, that French Axe could have a nice home here with me...

I think the fact that ax patterns that can only be hung one way, like that French Axe and Goosewings are found in almost equal numbers hung either way, says much about how the chosen hang was more about what was comfortable and felt natural than it does about handedness

single beveld hewing axes have some curved but not all the time I have used some antiques one that were flat, and all the double beveld hewing axes that i have seen were flat ;) I think it's important to note
