Coral Reef Ecosystems: A General Overview

Coral reef ecosystems are fascinating and unique; in part due to their high level of biodiversity and productivity. Coral reefs are solely found in shallow, tropical waters and have becoming the defining feature of these areas. Part of their high diversity is a result of having a complex habitat that is formed by the corals. Their productivity is in a large part due to the symbiotic relationship between single-celled algae called zooxanthellae, and the individual corals.
