I've always used a little braided line tied like a noose to strip a little of the rubber off from the end my fly. Then I use a needle to open the braided core a little, and put some zap-a-gap on my leader. Slip it in, spit on your fingertips and roll the connection. No knots/tough as hell. Always worked great for me, and my Dad too lol. I cut my leader at the top or the tapered section, and tie on a tippet ring. No issues whatsoever.

I completely get what you’re saying. I personally stick to loops because I’m constantly changing to different leaders. But I know I’m sacrificing some contact and energy for the convenience.

With most brands there is at least 6" of straight fly line at the tip before you start cutting into the taper.

For the last 47-years (since 1976) I've used a nail knot on the end of the fly line to attach the first leader. When I needed to attach a second leader, I would cut off the old leader about 18"-24" away from the needle knot. Then I attach the new leader with a 3-turn blood knot. That gives you the most streamlined and lowest profile knots to easily slide through the guides. About the only time I cut into the fly line after attaching the first leader to it is when the fly line cracks all the way through to the core behind the nail knot. If you use that rollover test like he started to show you here, it will become real clear immediately if you need to cut off that nail knot and tie a new one behind it because the knot won't roll across the top of that loop but will collapse. Very easy to see if that's the problem.

I use a sacrificial length of Maxima that matches the stiffness of the flyline...tie to that a dozen times then change it out....

Loops break at 27lb while nail knot broke at 17lb.. yet I do understand it may perform better in some instances.

most flylines have 18-24" of untapered tip, I nail knot on a new butt every year and take off an inch or two, loops suck...

How do you get the memory out of your fly line? I’m brand new to the fly fishing game. But having trouble with my casting due to the fly line coiling.

I don’t change leaders all that often and what I’ve been going is attaching a piece of mono with a nail knot to the fly line. I then blood knot the leader to it. By the time I run out of mono, it’s time for a new line…

I showed up at Bud and Mary's over 30 years ago. The first thing Captain Wood did was cut my new fly line loop off. I Flipped! I use Flips set up with the snell knot which is so easy to do. And throws great!
