In the beginning college and universities were affordable and had real practical purposes. They prepared graduates to be able to do important or valuable work. Like the Community colleges and trade schools do now.

Then a lot of rotten things started happening and the “education” thing became less important than football. And unusual fields of study started to emerge. Colleges built huge wonderful expense buildings and paid big bucks to tenured facility …) the football coach was still paid way more).
A college education became horrendously expensive at the same time when middle class of the hardest working people ever were losing important careers in important American industries, because its ok to screw over other Americans or the entire USA, if it makes you rich.
And the shrinking middle classes could NOT AFFORD this any more.
And they sure as hell knew, graduating with any degree and having a huge loan debt … was STUPID !

Then the federal government stepped in with that dreadful FAFSA thing and backing whatever loans needed. Students were ripped from their families because ….. they got funny money, a whole lot of money, for college. And the math regarding these loans ? ….. that financial math thing was never a graduation requirement.
In other words this whole thing became EVEN MORE STUPID !!!

And all the smart college teachers and professor and all those brains ….. are ok with this STUPID thing !

(If you have ever filled the whole FAFSA for your child, that thing is 100 times more invasive than the IRS ever dreamed about)

There is my loan unsubstantiated opinion about this …… the Loans are from Banks. Commercial banks and maybe other financial institutions. The USA gov only backs these loans. Or so I’m told. Or I read somewhere.
If you were the big boss at one of these banks and you gave students loans you are charging these former students # % interest.
That was then. This is now.

Inflation happened, time has past, and now banks could make more money on other loans and other financial schemes, if they could get back some of these loans now.
Also, the loans that are eligible for certain $ ####.## payments, and under the proposed “forgiveness” are the ones that are not being re-paid very well. People have trouble making payments and are often late. Or worse.
The Banks really want these “troubled” loans paid off. Or paid down. (student loans can’t be Bankrupted away, which is unique)

The banks like this idea. For “business” reasons.
Politicians like that idea. For whatever “crazy political and getting elected” reasons.

Politicians + Banks !! 👈👉 It’s like a very small year 2008 style financial disaster bailout. Without the disaster part.

There is no such thing as student loan forgiveness, The load does not disappear. It is a student loan transfer, The loan is transferred to other people to pay. Anyone that took out a loan they cant repay is an idiot and anyone that thinks it is ok to transfer this loan to someone else is even a bigger idiot.
