for xbox's its versions 1.0-1.5. 1.6 (mid-late 2004 mfg. date) is the exception. The manufacture dates aren't sure-fire way to determine revisions, best way to do it is to open it up, see the video encoder chip. 1.6 models have an "XCalibur" chip and you'll see it behind the DVD drive with the little Xbox "X" logo on it. The other two are Conexant and Focus. You don't need to replace the capacitor, but just remove it, it's the clock capacitor toward the south end of the motherboard by the controller ports. Each model it's placed slightly differently, but that's the region it's located. It's the medium size capacitor relative to the ones surrounding it.

All it does is keep track of the time while the system isn't powered for a few days, removal will disable the system clock in the default dashboard requiring you to set it at each launch, but you can use it just fine without it.

Something I would like to add in regards to Capacitor Replacements is BATTERYS. Older equipment, such as Roland SoundCanvas Midi Synthesizer has a cell battery in that, by now, is most likely leaking (mine had only just started, so, time is short!). If you have any old equipment or game carts even, that has batteries in, it's worth checking now, IMO.

Thanks so much for answering my question! Perhaps I'll consider getting things recapped if I'm getting other mods anyway, but it's good to know that nothing I have needs to be done anytime soon. I did know about the Xbox clock capacitor and did clip that out when I softmodded it a few weeks ago, but I'll take another look sometime soon.

So much happening lately, great coverage of it all. I am in awe of how you keep up with everything! :D Yes, all Xboxes (except v1.6) have a dangerous clock capacitor that should be removed immediately. Also, the Darksoft kit update allows it to run the original bit-perfect ROM images--they aren't Phoenixed or decrypted. This is why Twin Galaxies now accepts it, since after flashing, it's functioning as an original CPS2 PCB. The kit also plays and writes both unencrypted and decrypted ROMs though, which is why it's a bit confusing. The new development is that it runs 100% perfect MAME ROMs, and can write them back to suicided boards to restore them to their factory condition :D

Turbo Express/PC Engine GT and both the Sega and NEC Pioneer Laseractive PACs are top priorities to have caps changed as they are as bad or worse cap leakers than the Duos.

I want to post a piece of constructive criticism.

You often post about remakes for new consoles, especially things like Wonderboy: The Dragons Trap. I know that it is hard to mention every remake that gets made, but i wanted to draw your attention to a game that didn't seem to get a mention by you (I think).

Yakuza Kiwami is the PS4 remake of the PS2 game and it is absolutely phenomenal. I just finished a playthrough on my channel and it is a very well made remake that is so much fun.

The first two Yakuza games were released in limited numbers in the west and they dont look that good on a PS2 going into a flat screen (IMO) So to get a 1080p remake makes it so much more playable. I dont know about everyone else but poor image quality and dated graphics make it hard for me to enjoy the game.

Also, if we support a SEGA property, we will probably get more SEGA remakes in the future. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is being released in Japan on December 7th and i want a western release. So go out and buy every copy of YK1 you can find.

And Bob, if you could spread the word about these remakes it would really be appreciated.

The real weapon against trolls is not acknowledging them btw. You're giving them so much fuel.

Agree on owning a mega everdrive x7, has so many more features over the other ones. If the concern is wearing out a genesis, maybe have more than one. I bought some model 1s console only on eBay as low as $20 shipped.

Darksoft's MVS units are up for presale. Only 100 for right now. It's about $560 (didn't actually buy yet but that is an estimate for euro to usd conversion)

So about the caps on the OG Xbox: It concerns the cap for the RTC and affects all motherboard revisions except the final one (1.6) and if it’s blown you’ll have to keep setting the time and date.

When do you think that we get OSSC support for modern capture devices such as Elgato HD60 Pro?
I've been googling around about that subject but no one seems to have an answer or a workaround for this issue.
Elgato products are "cheap" alternative for current capture cards out there that support OSSC 60fps capture.

PS: play-asia is a credible shop. Don't let your past experiences with other Chinese shops weigh your opinion.

I asked this same question on MLiG's stream tonight, but couldn't get a definitive answer: Does anyone know if going from an Extron Crosspoint to an OSSC or Framemeister is safe for component sources? I assume you only have to worry about TTL over the sync lines, correct?

Congratz on 5k subs bob! I've just managed to acquire a sony bvm 20f1e from the netherlands guy, (it was his last one lol) going have to spend a lot of hours fixing geometry now. But I've have yet to mod my n64 with tims board but the only problem I'm facing is figuring out what type of sync method and cable should I use for my PAL n64? Is sync on luma recommend and can I use retrocablesUK pakapunch snes pal cable as an example? I was thinking posting this question on shrumps but I thought you might have an idea?

I am curious why Voultar's new passthrough board appeared to have an analog audio input, when DVI output doesn't include audio in the spec? Maybe he can weigh in with some thoughts. Where does the audio go?
