Meteora in Greece (Grecia Griechenland Griekenland ) - Μετέωρα - is a huge cluster of dark sandstone cliffs which rise out of Kalambaka, near the first hills of Pindos and Chassia, located 357 km from Athens and 237 km from Thessaloniki in Thessaly. Atop these large rock formations are monasteries. More than thirty monasteries were once active but currently there are only seven. Meteora is included in the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO. Meteora is one of the most breathtaking sites in all of Greece. The monasteries perched on top of wild, rugged rock towers is utterly amazing. Today pilgrims and visitors use stairs carved in the rocks, thus ensuring a comfortable and safe ascent to the monasteries. Meteora is a world-renowned rock climbing destination.
