These businesses sell your Personal Information, called Consumer data and use it to power customer experiences or create marketing strategies but often times, criminals steal this data to commit identity theft! The personal information being sold can include your first and last name, email address, home address and phone, credit, drivers license and social security numbers! According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), consumers registered 1.4 million identity theft complaints in 2021, all part of a year where consumers reported losing $5.8 billion to fraud overall—a 70% increase over the year prior. As of now, the U.S. has no federal laws that regulate data brokers or require data them to remove personal information if requested. How do you protect yourself?
