▶ A house collapsed into the Mendenhall River in the Alaskan capital following glacial floods, Saturday, Aug. 5.

👉 At least two buildings have been destroyed and residents of others have been evacuated in Juneau after flooding caused by a release of water from a glacier-dammed lake, officials said.

The Mendenhall River flooded Saturday because of a major release from Suicide Basin above Alaska's capital city, a news release from the City and Borough of Juneau said Sunday.

River levels were falling Sunday but the city said the banks of the river remained highly unstable. Some roadways were blocked by silt and debris from the flooding, it said.

Such glacial outburst floods happen when glaciers melt and pour massive amounts of water into nearby lakes. A study released earlier this year found such floods pose a risk to 15 million people around the globe, more than half of them in India, Pakistan, Peru and China. It looks like the buildings to the left and right are in serious danger too.

*The closest man made structure near that river should’ve been the road. All those buildings between the river and road shouldn’t exist* . That area should’ve been reserved as a park/green area with lots of trees and vegetation which means *deep roots hold soil together. That’s a fact a scientific fact about nature* .

Why would people build houses so close to water? They must never been to geography class 😅

Look how the roof system slide off that house.

Cut bank… it takes time for it to erode. When the ice on the river melts chunks of ice scrape along the corners. Causing the cut bank underneath.! I’m sure that house was originally further away from the river.

And they'll build back again right over the problem area, ...and people will still move in.

They ignored erosion over time.
Insurance probably won't honor any claims due to negligence.

Hmm. Apartment next to it looks like it may go also.

It's almost like there's a good reason not to build crap in a floodplain, much less two feet from the river bank.

Look on the bright side. At least they didn't lose everything. They still have their garage....for now.

It's easy think you're far enough away in case of a flood by looking at prior floods. I don't think it's actually a good idea to build only where we know something is safe for sure. It should be protected from everything except for a thousand or five hundred year flood

Seems like the house would be worth parking a barge underneath it.

Should've had a boat in the garage.

People also build in landslide areas, another horrible decision. Need to understand natural risks before building.

Oh no!!! And I bet the other buildings fell in not too long after...
