Lab values nursing nclex-rn, nclex-pn, and ATI review: This video explains the lab values nurses need to know for the NCLEX exam. You'll need to know these as a nursing student and as a nurse.

Normal lab values are a big thing you'll want to learn as you prep for your NCLEX exam. You can expect to encounter questions asking about these labs.

"Correction:" 07:05 Calcium level should read 8.5–10.5 mg/dL.

As a student prepping for NCLEX, you will want to know about the normal lab values of a CBC (complete blood count), BMP/CMP (basic or comprehensive metabolic panel), lipid panel, coagulation levels, arterial blood gases, and drug levels.

The complete blood count details the cells found in the blood: red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), platelets, hemoglobin, and hematocrit level.

The metabolic panel details the fluid and electrolyte status of the patient, glucose level, renal, and liver function.

The lipid panel details the patient's risk for cardiovascular disease (LDL, HDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides.

The arterial blood gas levels detail the patient's acid-base imbalance and if a respiratory or metabolic problem exists (blood pH, pCO2, HCO3, pO2, O2 saturation).

The hemoglobin A1C level is helpful in determining the patient's blood glucose level over the last 3 months.

Coagulation levels are important to determine clotting times, especially in a patient who is taking anticoagulants like Heparin or Warfarin.

Drugs level labs detail the amount of drug in the patient's system and is crucial in helping determine if a drug is toxic or therapeutic in a patient. Examples of drug levels would be: Digoxin, Dilantin, Lithium, Carbamazepine etc.

Hey Everyone! Thank you so much for watching! At 7:05, when I talk about calcium, the level should read Calcium: 8.5–10.5 mg/dL. I have mg/L on the board, it's suppose to be dL.
Don’t forget:

I’m a caregiver for an 80 year old retired hospital lab manager who has dementia. I play your videos and she listens and nods her head. She is late stage but I know she is listening!

At first I dismissed your videos Sarah, especially the med surg ones cause they were too detailed and I just wanted to pass. But I was wrong and I sincerely want to thank you for your videos that have taken me right up to my pinning tomorrow. Being detailed is not a waste of time. It helps answer the given question, no matter how it is framed. Thank you Sarah, very much.

New nurses/students have no idea how lucky you are to have videos like this to help you understand lab values and all the other topics she talks about. This would have been so helpful when I was in nursing school 30 years ago. If you didn't understand something, you read it again and hoped that someone clicked or you were just assed out!

Thanks for your videos. I've been a nurse for 3 years. I rocked management position and working with geriatrics and DD. Now I work in a hospital and I often feel so incompetent, specially in the ER. It gets to me sometimes. I'm trying to read more and and just be patient with myself but I am struggling. Your videos are excellent and very easy to understand. Thank you!

I am already a practicing RN and I watched your videos and even answer the quizzes that you post for my CMSRN exam. I just took my exam this morning and THANK YOU THANK YOU for contributing to my success! You explain everything so easy plus the visuals are a plus. I’m eating breakfast, doing household chores, and even getting ready for work I still listen to you. It helped me a lot. So THANK YOU and more power to what you do and everybody behind this youtube channel! 🙂

Good morning Nurse Sarah and her supporters. I first want to thank God, then my ex co-worker for reminding me to go back to watching your videos. I took my boards after finishing nursing school almost 3 years ago and I passed. Thank you for the refresher of information. I used you and another instructor Professor D. Each of you I could here in my head as I was taking my test. Blessings ....
