Present Simple vs. Present Continuous Tense | Learn English Grammar | ESOL Lesson

Показать описание
What is the difference between I SPEAK ENGLISH and I AM SPEAKING ENGLISH?
In this English lesson we look at the difference between the Present Simple Tense and the Present Continuous Tense.
We start by learning when to use the Present Simple tense:
1. For facts or things that are always true or generally true.
2. For regular habits or repeated actions
I have included many example sentences for each use.
Then we learn when to use the Present Continuous Tense:
1. An action happening right now at the moment of speaking.
2. To talk about something that is happening AROUND the time of speaking but not necessarily at that exact moment.
Again, with many example sentences.
NOTE: Sometimes the Present Continuous is called the Present Progressive.
Then we compare the difference in meaning by comparing two similar sentences together, one in the present simple, the other in the present continuous. For example:
- I live in English vs. I am living in London.
- It rains a lot in winter vs. It is raining right now.
Next we compare the present simple and present continuous in affirmative sentences, negative sentences and in questions.
Finally we look at questions with the same verb but different meanings. For example:
What do you do? vs. What are you doing?
What do you read? vs. What are you reading?
