Multi species cover crop proves itself - Regenerative Farming a Farming Revolution in Australia

Показать описание
Farming Revolution has experimented with a multi species mix of cover crop seeds over 8 months from 21st June 2020 to 1st March 2021. Harvesting on 23rd October 2020.
These seeds were planted into level 1 compaction bare dirt. I honestly didn't think any plant could possibly survive let alone become productive and then go on to create a thriving, mini ecosystem.
This video is 15 minutes long, but is well worth watching. Regenerative farming at its most simplistic and proves that covering bare soil with compost and MS cover crop seeds benefits the soil.

Will be interesting to see the soil after a few years
I had thought that, with a cover crop, the benefits to the soil are highest before seed set, as from then, the plant draws nutrients back up from the roots and then there is less food for the microorganisms and so less carbon. However, for great seed production, well done!
My viewing suggests sow everything at once for multi species and multi season, and what ever needs to germinate will grow when it is the right time. Agree with you regards the weed, the better plants will take over after time.
What a lovely spot you have, and your horse is so clever to have helped!
Build it and they will come x

Handy tip for relatively small areas like this where soil decompaction is needed. Taking a leaf out of lawn care, using a tined garden fork, push into the soil 3-4", wiggle about & repeat 5--6" apart in rows. It means that air & moisture can penetrate more easily & of course, if sowing seeds like here, some of those seeds will fall into the holes, hopefully increasing chances of germination. Takes a bit of time, patience and (inclination) but like Spring cleaning, usually well worth the effort.
Great video. 😎👍

Another way to introduce quality grasses and maintain ground cover, would be to roll out bales of hay over the bare ground.

It would have been nice to see you open it up for a short time to the horses then give it a rest period. With trampling, you would start to create soil, but continuous exposure to animals would be too much pressure. The Savory Institute teaches how to use animals as a tool to heal the landscape and improve water infiltration.

Woman after my own heart. Get the job done with whatever comes to hand. I've got a rake I bought for a quid at a car boot sale - it's lost the top 3rd of the wooden handle but is only used for raking the garden path; so hey ho! 🤪😁😋
Mum was often known to run out to the hay barn for baling twine if she couldn't find a belt for her trousers. 🤣🤣🤣

Why on earth do you think you need to test if multiple species is good for the soil it's exactly what nature does and nature has been producing great soils for billions of years

Do you measure your farm in square metres? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
