A court in Gujarat's Surat city on Thursday convicted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case filed against him over his remarks on the ‘Modi’ surname.

The complaint was filed by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi against Gandhi for his remark – "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?"

There exceptions to this law like that if the person alleges like in the RG case is in the public interest also he said that why chors have modi surname and he never said that all modis are chors also the person who filed this against RG, his name was not said by RG so he his defamed so the case against RG is baseless and should have been dismissed by the court
