EJ in the 70’s was banger after banger. A song for every mood.

Dee Murray plays an absolutely monster bass line here. He's a hugely underrated player.

We’ve heard this song so much we sometimes forget how brilliant the chord changes and structure of this song is.

Please Elton! Join Rick for an interview - it would be fascinating!!!

It would totally rock for Rick to interview Davey Johnstone. He was in on all of these insane arrangements through the years.

I love it. Old school Rick Beato, him being excited about breaking down a song. We need more of this, Rick!

Dee Murray's bass part in this song is absolutely kick ass.

I’d love to hear you analyze Elton’s “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”😮

Only a matter of time before Sir Elton John and Rick Beato joins up. And I'm already looking forwards to it!

My first thought from your initial description was Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding...probably my favourite Elton John masterpiece

Since the day I heard it, I've been obsessed with Dee Murray's bass playing on this tune.

Elton is a master at creating incredibly sophisticated chord changes that sound "simple" - because they flow so smoothly into each other. And Rick - you make it so much easier to comprehend music theory for us mere mortals!

The strangest song EVER by Elton & Taupin, is easily, "Madman Across The Water" ... THAT has crazy structure, lyrics, melody, et al... and is MAGNIFICENT!

Love the breakdown. I think Elton's classical training allowed him to think outside the box. It's not uncommon for classical pianists to go off the charts and change keys and modulate but when you add the 1970's Elton John's pop sensibilities to it, you get banger after banger, breaking all the musical rules!

The best part of watching your videos is seeing the joy on your face as you listen to the music. Beautiful!

This song symbolized America's bicentennial. The flute trills were a nod to the fife & drum of the Spirit pf '76. This was great, Rick!

This is a great example of why I love your videos: not only do you have a solid understanding of the music along with the ability to teach it, you are also clearly moved by it. I don’t think anyone can truly understand music that is not moved by it.

The badass bassline is what propels this song... Very Motown James Jameson like. Dee Murray killed it...

Something that joyfully unites SO much of Rock and Disco music (and even some Country) in the 1970s is the use of string sections; those ravishing violins added so much romance and elegance and just sheer atmosphere.
