Absolutely amazing!  A young man, 19 years of age, had the courage and determination to plan and execute a "peace mission".  His mother, although concerned about the trip, must have been the most proud mother alive.  He completed his mission, and people responded to it. Just incredible!

I remember this at the time then so too. I saw it from here in Britain at the time on the news. He is the same age as I am; and although I don't like what he did later on; I am glad that he survived to tell the tale so too of course. Thank you too.

That takes unbelievable though that the Estonian plane just ignored him. Probably assumed he was a Finlandian who got off track. Or "it's not a military plane just some young guy, not a threat". Funny they didn't at least try to talk with him thru the radio.

I wonder if he ever briefed any B-52 pilots on how to fly to Moscow?

This man also stabbed a woman when she refused to kiss him. So much for the heroism and glory.
"According to police, Rust pulled an 18-year-old student nurse into a hospital changing room and, after locking the door behind them, attempted to kiss her.
When she resisted, she was stabbed twice in the stomach, police said."

If someone wrote this story as a fiction novel back then it would have been dismissed as delusional hogwash.

I'm sure it was the most confusing day for Soviet law enforcement. No one expects a Cessna to randomly land in the middle of the city

Wow, seems like this sorry soul had spent most of his adult life in out Russian and German prisons, getting his usual dose of 15-months in the cooler per incident. Well, at least he had his 15 minutes of international fame / notoriety.

It must has been a major embarrassment for the Soviet Military to be unable to stop one little plane from landing.
