Someone who read the manual, or attened a training session. Makes me happy to see someone do it ans explain why.

Glad to see someone emphasize this. Its common to see contractors using the short teco nails in every bracket. It's also common to see joists toe nailed in place before putting on brackets to ensure the top surface is totally flat then putting hangers. In which case I can see why they would think using longer nails or screws there wasn't necessary. Doesn't make it right.

My construction company stopped using teco nails on structural braces years ago. We love the grip of the Simpson screws and have NEVER had an issue with inspection or call backs from the many clients. Thanks for the video!

Finally someone on these videos who knows what he is doing and why.

Should be using the longer ones in both areas since it’s a double on the outside rim

The effing 9AH flexvolt battery on an impact is the look of a true professional. I'm dying.

Damn, $8 worth of screws in one joist.

They sell them literally next to the hangers

They are great for post bases because you might want to take them out in the future to make adjustments but they are too pricey to use everywhere

We call 'em Tek screws and use them for everything.

Hanging TVs. Hanging Data Cabinets. Hanging Furniture. Installing bracing. Building retaining walls.

We always use screws on hangers, except for certain circumstances where nails were preferable

Dude. I have used screws for everything I build. never had a code violation. Nails back out over time no matter what your building. And yes, screws are fine. good job.

Let's be honest... The hangar is doing all the work. Anything you use through those two holes to secure the hangar to the joist, just splites the joist at the end, no matter what you do it's too close to the end of the joist for it to make a difference. Either way the hanger ends up supporting the joist. Most of this is just semantics... Honestly you could probably not secure the joist to the hangar AT ALL... And it would still probably last the same amount of time.... The hangar sidewalls are an inch on both sides.... The joist isn't falling out. Could honestly probably just set the joists in the hangers and leave it if they are flush. I know we shouldn't do it as a matter of practice.... But in theory it would probably be just as fine. If this wasn't the case then how would you ever connect a joist through a hanger that was connected to a 2 inch ledger board, that's over a concrete wall? I would rather have a free floating joist, then a splitting ledger board.

The reason people use nails and not screws on hangers is, because over the years the foundation of whatever you built shifts, nail’s allow the wood to shift with less tension, while still holding it together, screws tent to snap under the shifting tension

can i use the 2.5" attach the hanger to the beam instead of the 1.5"? i have alot of 2.5" on hand and would like to use them up.

And good luck finding an inspector that will actually check all of that.

I’m glad someone else does this too. People call me crazy for screwing in my hangers. But you can drive a tank on the decks I build/ repair.
