Moving Valgus Stress Test (for UCL Injury )

The moving valgus stress test is used to evaluate for ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) / medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries of the elbow. The shoulder is abducted to 90 degrees. The examiner grasps the hand or forearm with one hand and stabilizes the elbow with the other. The elbow is then flexed and a valgus force is applied while maintaining an external rotation of the shoulder. The elbow can be moved through an arc of motion. A positive test is pain, gapping or instability at the medial elbow, greatest between 120° - 70° elbow flexion.
