This video explains what is Curtius rearrangement or Curtius degradation. The reaction is named after the German scientist Geheimrat Julius Wilhelm Theodor Curtius. The reaction involves conversion of azide in to amine. The important factor here is alkyl group attached with carbonyl migrated to amine nitrogen with elimination of CO. Hence the reaction is rearrangement with rearranged carbon skeleton. The intermediate here is isocyanate. The key factor of the reaction is the product will be one carbon less than reactant. The reaction is also called as Curtius degradation.
