anemoia: a nostalgia for a time you've never known, a past you never lived
_______________________________________________________________________

Music for ENA: Dream BBQ's trailer by Joel G.

Eyra Norman as Spatulady Soprano:

Track art by Marco Cárdenas:
_______________________________________________________________________

fun music details:

Although backroom labyrinth is referenced explicitly at 1:23, it's also playing quietly in the background from 0:08 to 0:23

1:23 to 1:34 went through eight rewrites. While on a call with the development team about what would feel right in that moment, I played backroom labyrinth in that section as a joke. Joel and several other members begged me to keep it in. They made the right call.

1:34 subtly calls back to 0:41 using the same chord sequence and bassline

I added the fireworks at 1:37 before the animatic was finished. Joel liked the sound so much he added fireworks into the animation. I recorded the fireworks in my garden in 2019.

At 1:45, great care was taken to transition between Eyra's singing and a Chinese bamboo flute as seamlessly as possible. It's the same flute used in the first DBBQ trailer's music.

Eyra recorded her parts in a practice room on extremely short notice, incredibly unwell from the flu.

This track subtly references upcoming music in DreamBBQ.

Anemoia, for those who don't know, is a word that means nostalgia for a place or experience you actually never went through. So a longing and homesickness for an occurrence never happened, or a song never listened to...

I like how the letters D and A in DREAM flicker, leaving only REM, just like the sleep phase. Ingenious idea, since we experience the REM stage while dreaming!

The dream BBQ really has a studio Ghibli vibe to it, from the visuals like massive structures, down to the music. I am so hyped for this game.

I think this confirms "Backroom Labyrinth" as the theme of the ENA series and I'm all for it!

I am blown away.
The Backroom Labyrinth motif.
The sampling of a flare and firework explosions.
The absolutely unintelligible time signature.
The combination of opera-style vocals and synths Skrillex wishes he could get his hands on.
The booming piano in sync to contrast a softer melody.
The raw emotion conveyed here is something that doesn’t exist, much like the false memories that the song provides.

Oliver Buckland, you have created such an absurd yet fully enjoyable work of art here. It doesn’t provide emotion, no; this music forces no emotion and also every emotion into me, simultaneously. And I know this is just one track of a bigger picture.
I look forward to more. Thank you.

For some reason, this song consistently brings me to the brink of tears. I left a comment on the trailer saying that Ena's world feels like home to me, and I think that applies to this, too. It somehow feels both peaceful and archaic-- like an apocalypse that has already happened.
