As soon as I added 100ml of 5% naoh and crude product to sep funnel all the red bromine colour went away and I was left with light yellow transparent emulsion. All instructions up to this point were followed except the quantity of bromine was more like 7-8ml. I continued anyway but this washing step seems to have destroyed my dark product and become an unseperable clear yellow aqueous solution.

Any idea what is wrong?

er, the way you have that set up, with the inverted funnel with very little air space in it, that won't stop a decent suck back, if it ever happened, that is.

Very nice! I never heard that pyridine can be used as catalyst. But how is it possible? You need strong Lewis acid, which can coordinate bromide anions. But Pyridine is Lewis base.

Btw. bromobenzenes have boiling points around 220-225°C, so they don't distill before bromobenzene.

How could this be converted into chlorobenzene? Would bubbling Cl2 into this solution of bromobenzene convert it? Could a liquid be added?
