Are there any boom poles made of non-electrically conductive material? Or maybe one with rubber grips, or wearing rubber gloves? To say nothing of the interference in the sound, just thinking of safety.

You know... I once heard thunder coming in and I thought "GREAT! I can finally record some genuine thunder ambience", so I packed up my kit and stood out in a field with my 22' boom pole and yeah. It never occurred to me that I was standing out in a storm, pointing a metal rod up to the incoming lightening. I got home and then it dawned on me how stupid and lucky I'd been. Sounded amazing though.

Thank you for this video. So few people understand how this works. I used to have to change street light bulbs between high voltage lines. I found that if I kept one hand on the fixture while I changed the bulb I wouldn't constantly get shocks.

Lightning is direct current. When you stand under a power line, you are capacitively connected to a high voltage A.C power source. You are not going to be struck by lightning. You are relatively safe as long as you don't touch the wire. But there are various things you can do that would produce a substantial shock. So yes, if you don't understand the electrical aspect it's best to limit your exposure.

Are you sure that you aren't simply feeling the spidey sense... Those senses are tingling ;)

I've seen lightning strike close by (about 150 ft. away) multiple times. Maybe, I should play the lottery! Once, on a large boat it struck the water and I jumped in the air thinking I'd be safer. Another time, while driving I saw it strike a telephone pole on the road I was on. Also, while on a golf course where there was no shelter to hide in so I ducked low to the ground. As a lightning bolt passes through the air, the air expands faster than the speed of sound, generating a "sonic boom". This is created along the path of the lightning bolt. Millions of sonic booms are created, which we hear as a rumble. I think thunder is the sound of air collapsing in on the atmosphere where the lightning bolt vaporized all the air molecules (nitrogen, CO2, O2, O3).

Is this a new series called “Don’t try this as home - I did”? If so, I have some content to add.

There's electric and magnetic fields around the cables themselves

Actually recording "the sound of electricity" like this is kinda fascinating. I wonder how horrible this would sound if you were using cheap/bad gear instead of nice stuff.

Hey, Allen, a cute, lovely human being like you should not try this dangerous thing.
I do appreciate your friendly warning. Yet I was terrified to see you demonstrate this in person.

Take care. I look forward to your next safer sharing.

I accidentally touched the cables once with my 12ft boom. Definitely had chills over my spine for a second. Luckily I was fine and nothing happened

So that's why you shouldn't boom when it's raining 😂
