Last night, 3/28/2024, I drove over an hour west of Dallas/Fort Worth to get some relative darkness to see Comet Pons Brooks. I have Vortex 12X50 binoculars with a tripod, but wish I'd bought some much cheaper, much more powerful Celestron Skymaster 20X80s instead! I'm new to this & it took me a while to find the comet even though I knew where to look. Right now, with my 12X50s, only an hour & a half from the bright DFW metroplex, Pons Brooks is only a greenish fuzz that looks like a spot of mold. It'll look better in a few weeks. The problem with these binoculars is I'm now fascinated enough I'm about to buy a telescope! I'm considering a Celestron NexStar 8SE. Anyway, I sat in my folding chair for over _two hours_ jumping from Jupiter & it's moons (wow!), to Orion, to tracking one of about 100 satellites I saw streaking across the sky, back to Comet Pons Brooks thinking it'd get brighter as it set (nope), then the moon rose behind me & I had something new to examine! I could stare at all this for hours!

I managed to see it with binoculars and did my research to find it. I'm more upper the states of the United States and the comet was just behind it between west-southern. It was kind of hard to see with the naked-eye but seeing it was cool it had a brownish/red color in the middle/center of it with white color around it while having blue/green at the end. Not sure because the sun made it different colors but for sure looks different to airplanes flying when one was flying over me while I was watching the comet and after the comet show was over.

Oh man, I’m going to Texas for the solar eclipse. Debating on taking my camera or just enjoying the show. I was at the one in 2017 in Tennessee and it was truly a life changing experience.

I thought it was June 2 it would be closest to the sun? 🤔
No, sorry. That's closest to Earth, 1.5Au iirc

its too bad the comet will be so high up in the sky that it wont even come in the frame if trying to photograph the eclipse with it. you might need like a 20mm lens to get that wide of a field and at that point the comet will be just a pin point of light!

From Australia, never tried looking for comet's till now. Is 6.30pm the best time. Or is it just in the sky over a week and I can view it whenever as long as it's dark?
