The rain shadow effect is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs when moist air encounters a mountain range and is forced to rise up and over it. As the air rises, it cools and its moisture condenses and falls as precipitation on the windward side of the mountain range.
However, as the air descends on the leeward side of the mountains, it warms up and dries out, resulting in little to no precipitation. This creates a "shadow" of dryness on the leeward side, also known as a "rain shadow". The effect is most pronounced in arid or semi-arid regions where moisture is already scarce, such as in parts of the western United States, South America, and Central Asia.
