It amazes me how confident the people were who said this was against the law or something, people who obviously have no idea how the law actually works

At the end of the day, it's about removing the technical details of how the law works from the jury's consideration and instead asking them to consider solely whether the conduct meets each definition. Since each definition allows for more serious sin than the next more serious definition, he meets the requirements for all three. Once they have decided he has in fact met the legal definition for all three, it is now up to the judiciary to resolve the conflict and ensure his punishment complies with his legal rights.

The Supreme Court has recently ruled on double convictions when it comes to a federal and state case. So if a person robs a bank in New York, flees across state lines and gets caught, both the federal government and state government can convict the person of robbing the bank and would have to serve in both a state and federal prison at different times.

So something can be convicted of both being a square and a rectangle, but it'll only receive punishment for being a square.

Objection! Minnesota allows for Blakely hearings which allows for a hearing to determine if a higher level crime was committed based on a combination of lower level crimes. If that is confirmed he will be charged with a longer sentence than murder 2

Also because of state guidelines he may serve only half of the time. It depends how much the judge feels about him when he considers the severity of said crime
