I play traditional grip, it just feels more natural and i realized after buying lighter sticks that lighter sticks matters so much, the change was basically instant. I can get much higher single stroke speed after switching from hickory to (i think) cedar. It just puts so much more spring action back into your hand that the downstroke is super easy, it just comes naturally, no extra force needed, you hit and the stick is right back up into the top of your hand, so you can do a lot more with a lot less.

Using two different weighted sticks can give you interesting tone changes, heavier stick in the right hand can hit and sit on the toms to dampen them instantly and can open up a lot of interesting sound patterns for skower jazz breaks, for example.

So true. I love Merlini’s stuff, but I still don’t get it. At first I thought it was finger technique, so I practiced finger technique a bunch, and now I’m pretty decent with finger technique, but it turns out it’s a whole other thing, something to do with wrist rotation? Idk, but I still can’t play singles at that speed with or without the finger technique. 😅
