Growing up my mom would do this. She'd spread them out to dry on newspaper or used mailed envelopes. I always asked her you can't possibly plant all these seeds. She'd be like, "I know, I just can't see them going to waste." I'd throw them away cuz there'd be so many of them with her handwritten notes of the date, what type of seeds. Now she's gone and I cherish one I run across. I miss her so much.

I think it's vastly important to mention that: #1, always hand pollinate female squash flowers before saving seed, because there's a high chance of a cross in a home garden otherwise, and #2, seed fermentation. It's incredible! We've learned that fermenting squash seed and tomato seed gives us seed that is of higher quality and MUCH cleaner than simply dried. When dried, there is an opportunity for mold to grow. Fermentation removes the leftover bits of pulp and seed coating that aren't visible to the naked eye. Of course the idea of smelling multiple seed fermenting jars on your counter in the middle of summer may not be ideal, so this may not be for everyone. 😂

I find it so amazing that you guys, a seed company, are so giving and kind that you teach how to save seeds which could actually cause you to lose money. Yet you keep showing us. Truly amazing. I love you guys ❤️🌻

I dried mine outside and they were drying really well and then the next day they were gone 🤔....I found evidence of half eaten seeds, so evidently I made a nice tasty squirrel snack 🐿

Great video. And so beautiful that a seed selling company promotes seed saving.

Just saved some seeds from a Cushaw winter squash yesterday, they are drying now. One squash had 311 good seeds in it. Second batch of Cushaw seeds saved this year.

What about the warnings not to save home grown squash seed for the possible cross pollination making the dormant toxic attributes possibly stronger? That’s all over my no dig uk gardening groups. Bitter fruits and gastric issues... is that an urban legend/myth? They say zucchini and pumpkins especially. Any advice? I’ve saved pumpkin seed but too afraid to eat it so we use for decoration in fall.
