Dude grew up as an orphan. In an age without available examples of healthy relationships. I'd be honestly surprised if he even grew up with standard fairytales.
An absolute miracle he found a good relationship at all.

I always took this subplot as a ridiculous joke (though not a very funny one tbh). Eska is portrayed as an eccentric dominating weirdo from the start and Bolin is never truly comfortable around her, so to call it abusive feels like hyperbole. The relationship was never shown to be normal or pleasant. I'm surprised people take it so seriously.

Imagine if Eska and Bolin was more genuine like Princess Yue and Sokka's relationship was. That alone would make the relationship actually mean something and provide true drama when Unalaq's plan is put into effect. Bolin would feel betrayed and Eska would feel conflicted about going against the commoner guy she's crushing on. She'd be a much deeper character. (She can still be moody like Mai was and even eccentric, I'm just saying the possessive girlfriend schtick was ridiculous and not believable.)

Im not trashing legend of Korra. Every thing that is not that great is Nickelodeons fault . This show could have used 10 more eps
