Austria-Hungary. Ottoman empire. British, German, French and Russian empires.

World history on Khan Academy: Called the Great War (before World War II came about), World War I was the bloody wake-up call that humanity was entering into a new stage of civilization. Really the defining conflict that took Europe from 19th Century Imperial states that saw heroism in war into a modern shape. Unfortunately, it had to go through World War II as well (that some would argue was due to imbalances created by World War I).

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

In the end, I think the medium is dominating the message. Using maps and screen drawing means that a particular view of the Empires dominates (who was where), at the expense of a range of other issues, history, politics, culture, religion... So an interesting, but very partial picture is given.

Kahn also overestimates the linguistic homogeneity of countries like Italy and Spain, and underestimates the religious and cultural diversity, especially in the Balkans. By using a 1914 map of the Ottoman Empire, he underplays the fact that many of the Balkan countries (Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia) had only recently become independent from the Ottoman Empire.

if you study the crumbling of the Ottoman empire and the British attempts (some failed / some succeeded) to destroy the Ottoman empire, a lot of what is happening now in the middle east will be explained and make a lot of sense . great video, thanks.

Prussia was a German-speaking empire that lead the unification of Germany. It was not the same thing as Russia.

The video should point out that modern western Poland and Polish coastline was majority German speaking at the time and had long been so. The populations of Germans and Poles changed after WWII when German were expelled across the Oder and Poles expelled from modern day Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania to make way for Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian settlers and sent to former German lands that had been German for a long time. This was to push the borders of Poland and Germany as far west as possible according to Stalin's plans.

I love this guy and the way he presents and talks about history.

I want to contact this guy and find out how his computer was set up and his workflow. Unfortunately Khan Academy doesn't allow emails with specific questions, so I am at a dead end.

Anybody an idea about what to do?
