To be honest, spectrum has lot of text but no context, on the other hand bipin chandra is a book which will make u understand things ....so start with bipin chandra and for prelims one can switch to spectrum

Both books are good for different reasons.
Bipin Chandra is basically old ncert which is a must read.
Spectrum is more like prelims oriented.

Bipin chandra's work is like textbook, its a must for modern Indian history, and spectrum is more of an reference work. And many of the informations provided in spectrum is faulty, hence even if you read spectrum never lose a sight of bipin chandra's work.
