Relationships is key. I would not only say hello, but I made it a point to learn all their names in the first 2 weeks. I owed them candy when I fell short. It doesn't matter how old, students want to be recognized as part of a community.

Sooo important to know your students names and to greet them individually. COuldn't agree more. Another thing I found that works great is asking them for feedback when you try something new, like a methodology or activity. I feel like this shows that you aren't their rival, that you've got their best interest at heart, that you're actually willing to learn from THEM and that you really respect their opinion. I don't think students always feel that from teachers. Also, I like to ask how they're feeling at the start of class sometimes using a scale....i call out numbers 10 to 1...10 being feeling great....1 being feeling bad and ask students to put their hand up for whatever number they "feel". I also participate in this...and will explain why I feel a certain way and ask if anyone would like to share their reasons. It lets students know that you care about how they feel also helps them to improve their awareness around their mental health.

I try to greet all of my students at the door, I either shake their hands, give them a high five, a fist bump, or--if I'm feeling a little under the weather and don't want to touch anyone's hands--I give them an elbow bump (just touching elbows instead of hands).

When it's time to dismiss the class, I do that by telling them to have a good day/afternoon/weekend. I guess it's my version of "saying goodbye." My kids have come to expect it, so much so that when they're asking to be dismissed they always prompt me with "aaaand have a good day?"

I just started teaching yesterday, and you are so right! It's really hard in the beginning, but in my student teaching experience I really saw what a difference it can make, especially with kids who hate school. I made a survey for my students and going over their responses has made me really excited to get to know them, and I'm really touched at some of what they shared.

#5 is something I'm very passionate about. I'm happy to hear others believing it too and trying to encourage students ❤

This is so great, Amanda! I agree and will be using your tips in my classroom as a speech therapist.

I work with younger children (K-2). I use a rewards system with them in my classroom. When they reach a certain number of points, or get a certain number of stickers on their sticker charts, they get a prize from the prize box!

Other teachers in my school have an ice cream party or McDonalds party on Fridays for the students with the most points at the end of the week!

As an education major who just started college, these videos are my favorites 😩 I live in NYC and I cannot wait to be there for my students and make their HS school experience a little bit better. I’m currently deciding between what subject I want to teach, either bilingual (ENL kids) or be just a Spanish Teacher. How did you decide what subject you wanted to teach?

Showing an interest in other people’s interests is very key to building any type of relationship with anyone. The key is relatability. If you have that with others. Other people will always love to talk with you and hangout with you and be with you.
