I really enjoyed this unusual approach: it really demonstrated the distance and disconnect between different groups of people. I wouldn't want to always see S&D this way because the traditional way is nice, and as it was intended; but I don't mind Directors fiddling with different locales and periods in very familiar Operas, if they are trying to express or refresh ideas inherent in the Work. I think this keeps alive some of their relevance to audiences who have seen the Work done traditionally many times. I would hope the standard version would always be available to newcomers, as sometimes that version definitely makes the most sense with the libretto.
