In this video, Professor Thorsby discusses The Postmodern Condition by Jean François Lyotard, or at least sections from it. Lyotard argues that "postmodernism" is a condition in which metanarratives (or grand narratives) break apart simultaneous to the post-industrial technological age. When the grand narratives break apart, social discourse (and knowledge itself) are reduced to language games and the social and cultural bond solidify into social networks. His analysis seems to easily explain the current social and cultural effects of specific multinational corporations and social media.

Lyotard is more relevant now than ever! The discourse of language games goes so much further in explaining what is happening now in our country and the world. It’s not simply about reaching consensus on the facts. It’s about how those facts are interpreted and what role they play within the narrative of a given language game.
