During World War II, there was a group of female pilots known as the "Night Witches" from the Soviet Union. They became famous for their bravery. Flying old planes made of wood and cloth, they would quietly fly over the enemy's camps at night and drop bombs. These pilots were very brave, using only their courage and a stopwatch to find their way in the dark. To avoid being heard, they would turn off their plane's engine as they got close to the target, making only a whispering sound as they glided through the air. This made the enemy think of witches flying on broomsticks. Their slow planes were surprisingly good at escaping faster enemy planes because those planes could crash if they tried to go too slow. The "Night Witches" didn't have radios, guns for defense, or parachutes, but they were very skilled and determined to help win the war.
