In most countries, they take some time between high school and college

It pays to have people in high places help you out. The average freshman could have never done this. And everyone knows this too. Were her grades outstanding for Harvard? Called privileged. Comes in ALL colors.

I'll bet her gap year includes world travel, paid speeches, and a six figure internship.

I think a gap year is a good idea but it should involve a job not just play time. Volunteering or a job in the field that he or she would like to study for.
