Madrid is building a green wall around the city: a 75-kilometre urban forest with nearly half a million new trees.

This is amazing. The air the water and the produce grown nearby will all increase in quality and value

Depending on whether they're Deciduous Trees or not. If they are then when they shed their leaves in autumn all the C02 they've collected is released back into the atmosphere. Also of a night trees do the opposite of what they do during the day, not to the same extent, but at night they breathe in oxygen and out C02.

I love it but the heat island effect is about the one thing this won’t fix. The forest will be cool and breezy but the city would need its own canopy.

Does it require a lot of water from the city to be able to grow all of those trees near it? And how liable are they to catch on fire and spread to the other trees or the buildings near them?
