frankly was not a big fan of the new DT . but after seeing LUNA PARK and especially the instrumental section in this song . DT has reached new horizons especially on ADTOE and Mangini is plain awesome

Holy fuck this sounds way better than the studio. Every instrument sounds more prominent and the drums sound way more not drum triggered. And James sounds way more energetic and singing the way he feels the song and without layered vocals. This kicks ass

Mike Mangini is real progressive rock drummer and with him Dream Theater has become progressive rock band. Not like with Portnoy when they sounded like wannabee Rush and had drummer that sounded like he wished was playing Heavy Metal. Portnoy could not compete with any real Heavy Metal drummer and Mangini could have replaced Portnoy from the start.

As a drummer playing for about 30 years i have played Progressive and very technical music and i always played with emotions. Mangini is clearly having fun playing and playing with precision does not mean emotionless. It is actually really easy to play very tight and have fun hearing every drum sound sound same if the drums are tuned right and sound good.
I really love Manginis snare sound and tom toms and cymbals.

Playing music like Progressive Rock where drummer can do interesting complicated things naturally feels fun to play. Only extremely difficult things that only Mangini can pretty much do in his solos may require quite automatic playing but on normal Dream Theater songs he sounds like he is enjoying playing and that is enough. They are almost too easy for him so maybe he sometimes gets bored but most of what i have heard of him clearly shows he has fun playing.

There are no need to push emotion with overtly exaggerated way so that those who can't even play or understand the nuances of technical music could hear the "emotion". The emotion comes from the physical feeling of hitting drums and hearing the song. Whether audience feels it does not matter. The player may have the best live gig and enjoy all of it.

It is pretty much impossible for a drummer to not play with emotion Dream Theater songs because they have really good compositions. Even dull songs have interesting things.

The problem of getting emotion through to audience has obstacles like mixing, effects, recording quality after compression etc that distorts what the player plays. Subtle things disappear when the whole band plays at the same time.
With my stereo speakers all of this video sounds at least good. Clearly it is not the quality that the original (propably Blu Ray quality) audio is.

I love how people say Petrucci can't sweep, but, looks like some pretty successful SEVEN STRING sweeps, complete with tapping on the high end...that being said, I'm not a huge fan of the flanger or chorus that he seems to be using throughout the entire song here, something very unpure about the guitar tone, especially compared to the album version's tonal greatness.
