Try this around a variety of cores including a bolt for a selfdefense keychain. Works for lanyards and other objects.

I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks really cool! I’m thinking you might get a similar result by braiding an eight stranded square braid around the two standing cords. The only drawback you’d run into is dealing with the eight cords in your termination. It does look very herringbone-ish though.
