We raise chickens on a large scale! Broilers they are called for the grocery stores! We put huge amounts of wood shavings for bedding in our 40x 500 ft houses ! When we clean out 2 times a year we spread shavings and all! It will decompose and it benefits the soil and also helps by mulching to keep more moisture in the ground! I use some wood shavings in my flower beds, turns the soil so rich! Love all thevideos videos! Keep inspiring and teaching! I Been farming for years! We grow lots of produce to sale! ! Retired this year from school bus! Have a great fun growing season! Marlene from SC

Vegetarian here. I had chickens and LOVED it/them. No longer able to, but I truly miss them. Miss the sounds, their silliness and eggs. And miss the composting factor they added.

I had a garden, then started composting, and then I got chickens to add fertilizer and turn the compost for my garden and fell in love with chickens. Started with 7 in town, in an HOA, just moved out to more land, and now have 12 chickens and about 18 chicks! That’s how it goes 😂

Same here I have a HOA so no chickens but they do allow crazy loud dogs. I want to move too!

I've allowed my chickens to contribute to my compost and gardens since my first flock. They are amazing little garden friends (as long as they can't get into it, haha).

Our feather flock are on deep litter bedding. All our compost, veggie trim, household scraps etc make its way through the pen or paddock. We have 2 coops and the girls free range over 1.5 acres every day. Best recycling method ever.

I adore my chickens, I do free range with fence around my garden and the amount of ticks, snakes and other bugs they keep at bay is amazing. But we do love on a ranch so they have acres upon acres to hunt bugs. Plus, they are fun to watch.

Heck yeah I thought about using them for my garden! It isn't the reason I got them but it was definitely a strong selling point for my husband.

I've had chickens for 8 years now. I love them and they have contributed to my gardens immensely. I always let them peck and scratch the garden areas in the early spring to get the garden ready for planting. Thy always do an excellent job for me. I live in a suburban area so I am limited to 6 chickens but that is perfect for my husband and I. Thank you for your video. It confirmed I am doing everything right.

I would love to have chickens and ironically, in my city, it's possible. But my yard size and our extreme winters are prohibitive. That said - I LOVE watching those of you that can do this.

I'm in the city so I am not allowed to raise chickens. But years ago when I lived in the foothills I did have chickens and I just loved them.. They were a relaxation for me. I loved watching them interact and they were just hilarious. I miss the eggs too.

I’ve thought about chickens as well but concerned about cost of care etc

We have 8 hens, do the deep litter method, but do cold composting in the run. By using "poop boards" and scraping them we don't have to change out the pine shavings in the coop but about every year and a half. When we do clean out the coop, we put chicken manure in the run, move all the used pine shavings into the run, and let it decompose over time with the chickens turning it for use. The rest of the manure over the year goes into a compost pile and we let it do it's thing. And yes, the chickens get all kinds of scraps from our kitchen waste.

My Dad always said " If you want to see what wild life you have, raise chickens. " True enough! Everything loves chicken!🐔 I miss having them. My neighbor uses them in chicken tillers. When one spot in her garden is finished, she sets up a tiller there. They are great for killing out grass and weeds. Very smart and personable too. And you are right in not letting them free range a garden. They can desimate it rather quickly.😄

Oh, it is very tempting. When my husband was building our raised beds he received many inquiries from concerned neighbors, “You are not building a chicken coop are you” so although it is legal, we haven’t done it.

I volunteer to clean my boss's chicken barn now and then. Why? Free chicken poop! 😉

True, chicken manure is hot. But… If you want instant gratification, use straw. A little bit of straw added everyday, not a whole bail, or anything like that, but just a little added everyday to keep it fresh looking. The straw will absorb the chicken manure locking in the perfect fertilizer mixture and allowing you to use it when you need it. Of course, you can add it to the compost on coop cleaning day, if there is no immediate need. Example, need to fertilize a sapling that you are planting, put chicken straw at the bottom of the hole and it will work as fertilizer, as well as a time release fertilizer. Chicken straw works great as mulch/fertilizer combination. I learned this and much more about chickens farming them "organically". Allowing them to free range. Also, if you keep a watch on them, chickens will weed out a maturing garden of most pests, including small rodents. I will stress, unwatched chickens will decimate the garden. Happy gardening, love your videos. :-)
