Tesla Giga Berlin Brings Hostels, Overnight Tourist, Lots of Them
Показать описание
The lockdowns have affected the tourism industry in East Brandenburg where Tesla is building its Giga Berlin factory and a battery plant. However, some accommodation providers in Oder-Spree got off relatively lightly. They benefited from the huge construction site of the electric car maker Tesla.
Since March 2020, tourists have not been allowed to check into hotels and guest houses in Oder-Spree either. A hard blow for many landlords. But unexpected support came. "We are to a large extent a classic holiday destination. This virus hit us harder than other regions. However, this was offset by bookings from workers at the Tesla construction site," says Ellen Russig from the Seenland Oderspree tourism association to the rbb.
In March of this year, for example, a good 30,000 overnight stays were booked in Oder-Spree. Only around a third less than the year before. Also important for landlords: Giga Berlin's construction site workers often stay for several weeks, while tourists often only book a weekend.
Tesla beeches helped a lot.
For example, the holiday bungalows at the Wolfswinkel lake park on the Großer Storkower See have been continuously occupied by Tesla construction workers in recent months. That was very lucky for the company, as employee Darlyn Rusche explains. "We were only allowed to accept business travelers. There were some, but Tesla helped us well over time. So I could go to work every day and so could the other employees."
Gerd Sander also rented his holiday home in Erkner to Tesla fitters. It is not clear to him whether he will be renting out to tourists again in the summer. "Then the ability to plan is a little impaired. I can't say that the house will really be free at the end of June if the fitters stay a week longer. Then I'd rather cancel a tourist inquiry and hope that fitters will contact me again. "
Tesla also wants to build a battery factory.
Ellen Rußig also expects bottlenecks here and there when summer tourists are allowed to come again soon. But she's not worried. "Then it will be the case again that business travelers go on vacation in a classic way in summer or workers also go on vacation in the vacation season," she explains. The cheap hostels and motels in the region are less of a focus for tourists. Here, too, many are currently fully booked with workers from Polish subcontractors.
And as it became known on Thursday, Tesla is rescheduling, has applied for permits for the construction of the battery factory, and also wants to expand the Giga Berlin's body shop. The accommodation providers may therefore continue to expect bookings from Tesla workers.
