Hurricane Ernesto pounded Bermuda Saturday with powerful winds and 35-foot waves, drenching the British island territory in heavy rain that it is expected could cause deadly flooding.

Residents of Bermuda reported a temporary calm as the eye of the storm passed overhead. However, the island was expected to endure hours of punishing winds and rain over the weekend as the storm crawled north.

The centre of the storm is forecast to continue moving away from Bermuda Saturday as it approaches southwestern Newfoundland late on Monday, the U.S. Weather Service said.

Had I finished my healthcare program, I would have been living and working in Bermuda or Bimini

A new category to be used by the state sponsored media. We've had, "Unprecedented." We've had, "Historical." We now also have, "Not to be taken lightly." The fear must go on. This hurricane season has been a historical dud. The exaggeration and drama in the reporting is unprecedented. These people demand that they and their climate proclamations are not to be taken lightly. 35 foot waves in Bermuda. Yeah, right.
