This is how men learn. Nick doesn’t have much experience with relationships and now he is learning. Quality time is huge for women and it’s not about the lavish dates. How can someone fumble when the two do not have the same life goals. No one has to be the bad guy when things do not work. They are simply incompatible with each other. I dont think you fumble if you both choose to not live a life of unhappiness and possible resentment.
