In the aftermath of residential schools, healthy elders are essential to the identity of Indigenous people. They impart wisdom and help younger people understand their history and struggles. They are teachers, healers, protectors, and storytellers.

Doreen Spence is an internationally respected Cree elder who does volunteer work in Native and non-Native communities. Doreen offers her wisdom to local, national, and international organizations, including the United Nations.

This talk was part of "The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging presents The Walrus Talks Mobility." It was filmed by Lucas Boron Productions in Hamilton on October 5 at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre.
