I'm not allowed to build a tiny home out of a wooden Home Depot shed but some large corporate builder is able to lobby the local government to let them build a bunch of homes out of literal paper. Love this country.

A Sears home from their catalog in the 1920’s would cost about $2, 000 and they are still standing today.

As a plumber I go underneath a lot of 50 plus year old houses, the huge beams and overall structural integrity is far better than anything built in the last 20 years

My hubby and I purchased a late-1950's brick ranch 5 years ago. It withstood a huge tree which fell on it in a severe thunderstorm with 75+ mph winds back in 2023. Not even a month later, Hurricane Idalia came through and knocked over two more major trees on it. Finally, in September 2024, Hurricane Helene barreled through our city, this time crashing 3 major 125-foot pines onto our roof. With each of these storms the roof had to be repaired, but the integrity of the house withstood without structural damage. I am tired of dealing with these Dixie Alley storms, but I'm so grateful for the care steady hands took 70 years ago to build a sturdy home for a grateful family they would never get to meet in 2025. ❤

We just bought a house built in 1955, it has its issues and needs some love but it’s built like a tank. Videos like this make me appreciate it more.

Just bought an old home, sold an old home with great bones. Wanted to live in another and take my time fixing it up. I LOVE it warts and all. So much character.

Im a retired handyman. I replaced a window in a high end neighborhood with golf course, swimming pool, and recreational areas. The walls built with insulation foam boards, covered with Hardy Plank. None of these are structural material.

Someone who’s been in the remodeling business for a while now, new homes are built to minimum standards for safety and efficiency, but not longevity. I just did a bathroom project for a client with a 150 year old farm house. Told them, this place will easily make it another 100 years.

I'm in Tasmania, Australia. My house was built in 1910. The frame is Tasmanian Oak, Eucalyptus oblique. The outer walls are all stone and the inner walls, hard plaster. The floorboards are also all original Tassie oak and look like they could have been nailed down last week. From old photos the original roof was shingles but was replaced with corrugated iron sometime in the 1950s. So, my home is 115 years old and will still be here in another 115 years.

All the houses around me were built after 2012. They are built very solidly and floors supported by steel I beams. Parts of my home were framed with 2x6's. Main floor bolted to the concrete walls at short intervals. They would easily withstand a major hurricane. I guess it would all come down to your building standards. Homes here must be able to withstand earthquakes too.

That’s expensive cardboard, better start saving all my Amazon boxes for my future house.

The house I live in here in the UK is over 400 years old. Absolutely rock solid. I considered selling it a couple of years ago to buy a new modern home that was being built nearby until I went to take a look at them. They're more solid than those in the video, but not by much! Chose to stay in the old home instead and paid to have it all rewired as the electrics were last done in the 80's. Cost a few grand for the electrical work, plus to have all the walls re-plastered etc. but now it's basically perfect

I bought a 1975 ranch. Solid as a rock. When Helene was whipping throug, I didn't even hear a whistle.

Sheathing is a crucial part of the structure. It looks all the framing together. Can't believe someone approved this design

There's literally an episode of King of the Hill focusing on new builds that fall over in the wind. Great episode on cheap home making.

In 1949 I was a barefoot kid in Dallas watching a Lustron prefab home being assembled on a neighbor's property. I recently drove by the old neighborhood, which is now rather pricey, and saw the house still standing there, never painted but looking just as it did some 75 years ago. The property description says the exterior walls are aluminum, but in fact Lustron homes were made of steel panels with baked enamel finish. No paint needed, ever.
