Also the adult jokes in the movie are a classic. Especially Chowder’s “so it’s a girl house”. As adults we all know what he was thinking of

Getting older made me realize how dark and depressing the story was. An old man coming to accept he has to move on with his life. To get rid of his true love for his sake and everyone else’s safety.

Mr. Neberkracker's side of things was just pure saddening. He rescued that woman from a life of misery and enslavement, and he genuinely loved her. He wanted to build her a house from the ground up. Once he realized her soul had stuck around, he likely built the house with the intention of recreating a body for her, one that could make her feel more human again.

Over the years, when she lashed out at children, he knew it was a problem and made himself out to be a cruel and terrifying man in order to protect the children _and_ keep his wife with him at the same time. He likely contemplated destroying the house several times over the years, but he never had the heart to do it until the very end when his hospitalization was the wake-up call that he needed to acknowledge the reality of everything. He just couldn't physically keep up his usual solution. His lines of "I have to make things right." and "But if I let her go, I'll have no one." set up the idea that he was well aware that his solution wasn't a sustainable one, but he just couldn't let go of her (I feel like the fact that she showed no sign of wanting to be freed was what made this plot so unique). Constance trusted, loved, and relied on him. To destroy her house body was akin to killing her all over again in his eyes, but he had to do it to protect innocent children.

It's easy to be selfish when you genuinely do the things you do for the sake of others. Children were terrified and had their toys stolen. People and animals alike were hurt by Constance lashing out, but despite knowing that this was a serious problem, her devoted husband could never bring himself to harm her. He craved companionship more and more as he drove people away, fueling that horrible cycle.

We don't often have media portrayals of relationship dynamics like this where the _man_ is the one caught between loving a parner who's cruel and harmful to other people, but also someone good to him and someone who he relies on. It's truly something to be praised and treasured as high-quality writing.

There’s something oddly satisfying about this movie. I still remember the arcade scene and it reminds me of that Jimmy Neutron movie where everyone’s parents got abducted by aliens.

This movie is really unexpectedly solid. It has some of the most natural dialogue I've ever heard in an animated movie, and real emotional chops. Nebbercracker and Constance's backstory is so heartbreaking.

This video essay has all the vibes of someone just sharing with a friend all the things they love about a movie. A good vibe to have.

I feel sorry for the old man and his wife. She suffered a lot by the circus and the kids were the nail to the coffin. They couldn't have a happy life

3:56 Something about showing the Monster House followed by stock footage of Casita while she’s described as a “regular possessed house” is hilarious to me. Casita would technically fall under the “magically animated” category.

Over the years, you’ll learn to know that Mr. Nebbercracker was never the villain, but a victim. A hostage in his own home.

The whole shtick about a house being haunted has been done lots of times, but this movie takes it to a whole new level. The house isn't just haunted, it's alive.

It's story is decently well written, with some flaws, and the animation is really unique. Characters are memorable, music is cool, and it's scary enough where it's not rated R.

As a fan of the movie, I'm gonna give you some facts that you may not have known about Monster House.

1: The original plot of the movie was set up where DJ was a troubled kid who was constantly bullied, and he eventually finds out the house is alive. He then lures his bullies to the house, and they get eaten. There wasn't a whole lot more to it, because it got scrapped for being too dark.

2: The house was originally supposed to have human flesh inside when the protagonists end up stuck in the house, but that got removed for being too dark.

3: In the DVD extras menu of Monster House, there's a behind the scenes showing off how the creators got the ideas to making the house alive, as well as what specific sounds to use to make the house sound alive as well.

4: When Skull leaves the Game Zone, the actor who played as him broke his ankle when he exited the building while filming.

Monster House has a unique world, it makes me wish there was more after it, but it's one of those movies that makes you thankful that it exists, and it's probably for the best that it stays as one movie.

However, there is talk that Monster House could get a sequel or spinoff, but that's up for debate. Given Monster House is just one movie, it'd be hard to try and appeal to audiences today.

Overall, Monster House is a solid 8/10.

I remember buying this film back in 2006/2007. I used to watch it all the time as a kid. So glad I was a kid in the 2000s ❤

I was literally thinking about this movie early today and how the character designs looked so simple and basic while it saves the budget for the amazing effort done to the possessed House with all the elements and work required to make it look amazing

One scene you forgot to mention which in my opinion is the absolute best scene is when the three of them talk to skull the “thou art dead champion” and he gives those descriptive explanations about the “domus magtibulus” an actual living house and how to destroy it “ the heart” in this case the chimney, which actually ends up helping them. Not only that but the way skull talks to them with his fearful descriptions onto the kids and the slight forshadowing as he mention “oooh look at that blood”. I could talk about that scene forever masterpiece of a scene in my opinion.

Oh gosh I remember watching this movie many times as a kid. It TERRIFIED me, _especially_ the DVD title screen that just showed the house at night with spooky music in the background. It freaked me out so bad.
