Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to revisit drifting in Trailmakers using the gyros and logic blocks. Can I get it to feel more like legit drifting?

About Trailmakers:

In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.

Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!

Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.

Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.

Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.

Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.

Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

scrapman you were supposed to spawn it on stranded, thats why theres a roof

what i tried - rear wheel drive, slim wheels all the way round, no rocket engines because the rockets wont aid your wheel spin, add some weight for inertia, gyro and servos for steering, doing this aloud me to go slower to break traction and drift for as long as you want

The map is built under the test map, and it has some Easter eggs too btw, there was one in the video

Place the thrusters at the front and have them pivot with your car so they always point in the direction you want to go. With your current setup, they push the car at an angle, making it harder to exit a drift cleanly. The thrusters should help you maintain speed through corners, as drifting reduces speed due to friction. By counteracting this friction with a force from the thrusters, you could achieve larger drift angles even at lower speeds.

You can also send a negative 0.01 output to a wheel to act as a brake. You can also use a different level of output between the front and back wheels to simulate burnout.

Once you get passed a certain angle (more than your steering angle) then your front wheels start to lose traction too. Drift cars have a ton of steering angle so that you can still track when you are kicked way out.

I loved this. You took different approach than I thought. I would deploy low friction skis lifting back wheels a bit based on side speed.

Trying to use drift physics on keyboard and not controller is like trying to pilot a deep-sea submersible with a contr... too soon.

You could try using skis in the back to take away traction from the back wheels on demand using a piston, not sure if it would work but worth a shot

2:43 he says logic twice! 😂 also keep up the awesome videos! (Your my favorite youtuber😅)

The main reason you can't slide properly, is because the slip-angle is really high. You need tires that give way when you want them to.

great video once again!!! althought one thing that you could have done was to put the gyro steering in the front of your car, like that it would make the back of the car oversteer way more easily with less forces :D (sorry I'm french my english might be bad)

Hiya Scrap! Had an idea for another possible drift mechanism - you could have the speed sensors connected to hinges on the back wheels which turn *the same direction* as the front wheels - so that rather than turning sharper it instead causes a strafing motion, which would help simulate the back wheel burnout which you mentioned several times.

Omg your front tires need a lot more steering angle.

i made this in scrap mechanic, if you use a logic block in trailmakers to power an engine you could toggle how kuch power it outputs and rev the front engline lower than the back and make it try and catch up which in turn makes it burn out. not sure if anyone else said this

edit: obv not realistic

i have a little itty bitty shopping cart drift thing on my workshop under name steepercreve, i think its pretty fun :3

1:06 there is "gnome" way out of this map

i think you should look at community drifters for a video, the creator of the map has some great ones

One thing that could help you extend drift time is hooking thrusters up to three(or more)-step accumulator that outputs 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 power or something like that

Maybe try having grippier wheels in the front so turning out of the drift is stronger

I've been having some fun with the campaign and I'm really enjoying the process of designing a heavy-duty vehicle that can carry a huge load and be stable doing it. It would be cool to see a challenge where you and the boys take turn carrying a large round ball of varying weights from one spot to another.
