Gide was one of many Western intellectuals (and celebrities) who dutifully made the pilgrimage to the USSR to pay indulgences to Stalin. Gide was a 'fellow traveller' - at least for a while. He soon had the good sense to walk back his early, credulous infatuation with communism - as did many others. The brutal facts of the Soviet regime were becoming simply undeniable. Perhaps he felt Stalin had made a public fool of him (he had).

This idiocy would reoccur over the next decades as other gullible intellectuals trooped across Eastern Europe, paying homage to the likes of Ceaușescu, etc. Some even made it as far as North Korea, prostrate before the Dear Leader himself, Kim Il Sung. Things reached peak idiocy when a few even heralded Pol Pot's 'Democratic Kampuchea' as the model of a 'new society'. By the time the invading Vietnamese Army had uncovered the extent of the Khmer Rouge's mass murder, earlier Western fans of the toppled regime were, curiously, nowhere to be found.

Surtout quelle honnêteté intellectuelle de Gide sur ses erreurs ! Bien loin de nos ayatollah d'aujourd'hui ( Badiou : stalinien maoïste non repenti) ou d'hier (SARTE qui terrorisait son petit monde).
