To be completely honest, I don’t really think that either of these qualify as “expensive“. When you compare Arteza to Windsor & Newton, then you will have a good comparison.

There's definitely a problem with the amount of shellac or whatever binding they've used to make the gouache shiny! It's really not supposed to be. The arteza looks better there definitely - but I do know a downside to them as I've bought them in the past. Putting them in a palette for easier use caused them to MOLD - they don't put anti-molding agent in their mixture and my palette turned out rather disgusting.

Anyway great piece! And tips regarding brushes, a soft roundbrush should be fine in most cases as it has a lower chance of disturbing the paint underneath compared to a harder brush - so go for watercolor brushes!

Also! Chloe Rose's brushes are actually really nice for gouache! Plus they are soooo easy to clean :)

Just saw the end result and… WOW! They are both really good tbh and it’s hard for me to choose but I’ll have to go with the expensive side just because it looks like more of a treat to paint with. And as always great job!!

hahah, the ones you chose for your test are the same price and quality... The artwork is awesome!

About gouache: Pro quality gouache is about 15-20$ per 15ml and they are available as individual tube. The price depends a lot of the pigments, lightfast or not.. etc. All colors are not the same price and there's a logic to that... pigments can come from brunt crap or from precious stones, so it shows in the price of a tube.
The thing with gouache is : it's watercolor+chalk. You truly only need 2 gouache colors, the whites : Titanium white for opaque or pastels and Zinc white to mix with watercolors of your choice.
You can buy some M graham white zinc and white titanium, then some watercolor with the colors of your choice individually, quality of your choice. I usually use M graham for the whites and holbein for the black, watercolors for the rest of the palette. A warm and cold version of each primary (lemon yellow, quin gold, aliz crimson, vermillion, F. Ultramarine, cerulian blue) and some earth tones (burnt siena, y. ocre, sepia) in watercolor + 3 tubes of gouache (titanium and zinc white + some black), and you got the whole color circle available with 12 tubes. With this material you have full control over hue, value AND transparency.

For the brushes.. again, it's watercolor, it depend on the techniques you do most... depends on your use of water actually. The more watery you make your paints, the better the brush needs to be at retaining and releasing evenly. A good mop for washes, some nice round brushes with a pointy tip. A rigger brush for lines and a couple flats and daggers for thicker application and dry brushing. You want soft brushes with some bounce. Watercolor brushes are insanly expensive if you get the good stuff. If you don't do large washes, then you don't really those natural hair super expensive 150$++ brushes. The mid-level watercolor brushes do just fine for gouache.
I hope that helps... have fun!

I am inspired to try Gouache after these but have always been afraid to try – not because of learning a new medium, but out of fear that it might be the one art supply too many that causes my hoard to finally tip over and crush me.

I like different things about both sides and can’t pick a clear favorite, so I guess the winner is me for watching a great and inspiring video. Great job as usual

I believe it's safe to say: Most of us if not all of us are here for the charmful, cheerful, cheesy (say it 5× fast) energy you bring. And if someone has a problem with you rocking out, they can stuff it. Thank you for the wonderful content. And Arteza with the Matte finish is the winner for me!

I’ve watched basically every video you have posted in the past 2 years, yet somehow I’m always shocked with how great the results look. Both sides looked great, however, I preferred the Arteza side!
