Talk on 'Why the West fears China' will consider developments — both inside China and in the wider world — that have contributed to the mounting concerns about China’s seemingly inexorable rise, with particular reference to the discourse about Chinese attempts to interfere in Australian public life.
Pradeep Taneja has been reading writing about China for the past several decades. He lived and worked in China for many years and is fluent in Mandarin. Based in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne, he is also an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute and an Associate of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies. He was earlier, this year, a Visiting Fellow at the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin. Dr. Taneja is currently researching Sino-Indian competition in the Indian Ocean region.

The discussion will be chaired by Harsh V. Pant, Director of Studies, ORF.

Because China built 7 French navies in 7 years 2013-2020
because in 13 years 2008-2021 China build 38.000 km of high speed railroads 200km/h +
etc.

Interesting talk as an example of how fear creates fear. China has been fearful of western and outside invasions due to its past experience (such as opium war, Japanese invasion etc). So it has managed to regain its economic strength and also strengthen its military to protect itself. But this strength has in turn created a fear in the west, Japan and india of China.

As a Chinese, I watched this video, the discussion was good, almost 99% of the contents are right. To understand China rising, you may need to study last 100 years history of China and 5000 years history. You should know western ideology is not universal human value. CCP as China the leader, you can see they can do U turn in 1978...

Basically, the West simply cannot accept the progress China has made this far! And the sad thing is most of them simply cannot adjust their archaic thinking, Asia and other parts of the developing economies will increasingly increase their presence in the international platform. As for EU, their declining economies have also influenced their views on China which had certainly not only surprised them but kept them in a corner almost painted by the west! Such behavior is best amplified by the Aussies who demand trade but still insist on having their way. Do they still of how the West conducted the trade that led to the Opium Wars!!!

I wonder if western think tanks can also be a bit more objective and consider the effects of US foreign policy (regime change) on other countries and how it may shape defence policies in future. They have a tendency to see things in a vacuum. Usually the behaviour of one shapes the behaviour of another, so both sides be analysed rather than just one side.

Discontent in Australia started with immigrants Chinese, coming in n buying up . A small percentage of rich Chinese can be translated to a big amount especially for a nation like Australia! The local Australian fell behind n cannot compete with them financially! Jealousy sets in and Trump gave them a boost! Resulting in the current toxic environment

Chinese national socialism is different from German national socialism, but the Chinese have the benefit if hindsight. Hopefully there are no megalomaniacs in Chinese leadership who will opportunistically take power as soon as the present leader goes. Pradeep Taneja seemed to give a good and objective analysis.
