Streets of Lost Memory: A Congolese Migrant's Experience in South Africa

This film, written, directed, edited and partly shot by Jazz Lohaka, a DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) asylum seeker living in Cape Town, South Africa, was created as a part of a personal documentary filmmaking programme called Reel Lives in 2017. The film document's Jazz's personal experiences of leaving his home and family behind him as he searched for a better life, leading him across half a continent to Cape Town. Known for its beaches, mountains and tourists, Jazz discovers a bittersweet life awaits him in this city as he traces his own experiences alongside those of other foreigners as they wrestle with bureaucracy and xenophobia in a country known for its hostility towards immigrants.
