Hard boiled Sam Spade type private eye novels work too. You could even make it a female detective. A female PI in the 1940s would be interesting.

I’m really excited that you’re participating in Nanowrimo too. I’m working on a book in the least dark of my dark fantasy series. It’s really tough juggling writing with raising my 4 kids, so it’s coming out more like an extremely detailed outline for a future novel than as a novel itself. That’s fine, though. I’m just shoveling in the sand from which I will eventually sculpt the sandcastle.

If you find that you like writing romances, maybe you should look into self publishing. These days it’s possible to make good money self publishing in any genre, but that is especially true of romance. The benefits of self publishing are that you get to keep a greater percentage of every sale and you have greater control over how and where your book is marketed and sold. The downside is that you have to take on more responsibilities that a publisher would usually handle like hiring an editor, buying ads, etc. You should look into the Facebook group called 20BooksTo50k and dig into their courses. It’s a community of self published authors who help each other out and it’s completely free.
