How do you find the best sketchbook for beginners? What if you’re a starving artist? I’ll share the imperfect (but perfect for me sketchbooks) that I bought by the dozen when I was a teenager — and kept using into adulthood!

In fact, perfect for me is the one that I make by myself.

Canson makes the 180 Sketchbook, which has a unique binding that looks like a stiched sketchbook but it can lay flat, so you can use both pages which doubles the paper size! The paper is really good quality, the color is a very slight Ivory, but still looks white. The tooth is perfect for dry mediums.
The only downside, its the thickness, that is only 90gr. However, if you're not using watercolors or Alcohol markers, the Canson 180, is a great choice! It's the best sketchbook, for sketching pencils (Graphite, Chalk, Oil etc)
For Pens the Sakura or the Moleskin are the way to go. Black Fountain pens, look great on the cream toned paper the Sakura Sketchbooks have! For Watercolors, the choices are more.

Perfect bound all the way, because I enjoy working across the spread. I've also found that ink and pencils smudge in spiral bound sketchbooks. It's unfortunate that the range of papers available in stitched books is a lot smaller, but after many years of trying out different brands, I've found a few I like a lot.
